Inter Milan defeated arch-rivals AC Milan by a score of 2-0 in the first leg of the UCL semi-final. Rafael Leao was ruled out of the first Milan Derby since 2005 due to injury. Marcelo Brozovic, Inter’s midfield talisman, was benched.
Edin Dzeko’s first Derby della Madonnina goal came in the eighth minute when he volleyed from Hakan Calhanoglu’s corner. Inter increased their lead three minutes later when the home defense gave Henrikh a free shot at Mike Maignan.
Calhanoglu nearly sacked Milan’s goal a third-time with a long range effort that rebounded off Maignan’s left-hand cross. Ismael Benedacer, the injured defender for last year’s Serie A champions, was forced to leave the field moments later. AC Milan received a reprieve after a VAR review overturned the initial Inter penalty for Simon Kjaer’s pulling on Lautaro Martinez.
AC Milan began the second half with a bang. Brahim Diaz curled a shot just past Andre Onana’s right-hand goal before Junior Messias did the same. Maignan, the more experienced goalkeeper of the two, had to stop Dzeko from adding to his score after being set up by Alessandro Bastoni. Sandro Tonali was reportedly the closest to scoring for Milan, with a shot that bounced off Inter’s woodwork.
