Dana White announced Colby Covington would be fighting for the next welterweight championship. Dana White, the UFC and Covington have all been very adamant in their support of Covington. Dana White may not be able to see the world through the eyes of many welterweights. Belal Mohammed is still trying to understand the reasoning behind matchmaking, and believes that Covington does not qualify as a PPV superstar.
Colby Covington shocked everyone by appearing as the back-up fighter for Usman and Edwards 3 in UFC 286, a fight that was televised live. Leon Edwards was able to successfully defend his title and win the fight by split decision. Dana White announced immediately after the fight that Colby Covington will be fighting for the next welterweight championship. White’s choice disappointed several welterweights. Covington was inactive for almost a year, while others rose up the ranks and beat opponents. Covington’s opportunity was viewed by many as unworthy.
Belal Muhammad who has already fought Edwards believes that Colby Covington does not deserve to be a PPV superstar. “I think it’s because Colby – don’t ask me why – maybe Dana White loves him or UFC sees potential in him. I don’t believe he is a star. Masvidal and Kamaru Usman are the reason he sold PPVs. Belal Muhammad said, “I don’t believe it has anything whatsoever to do with him ,”.”
Belal has won eight fights in a row, including one against Leon Edwards. Edwards, who believes Covington is not deserving of the opportunity to be champion, will need to defend his title very soon against “Chaos”. Gilbert Burns challenged Belal Mohammed to a fight in UFC 288, however, no further information has been released about the potential match.
UFC 288 could see a fight between Gilbert Burns vs. Belal Muhammad
Gilbert Burns , welterweight, is eager for more after his victory over Jorge Masvidal. UFC 288 was a disappointment for many fans as fights were rescheduled and replaced. Gilbert Burns saw an opportunity and challenged Belal Muhammad to a fight. Durihno’s last victory over Jorge Masvidal had ensured Durihno was the next in line for title shots, but Burns still wanted to be active until this opportunity knocked on his door.
Gilbert Burns had tweeted in January that he would fight anyone in his division. Belal Muhammad tweeted the exact same thing shortly after. Burns, however, went on to beat Masvidal despite Belal not fighting anyone. Burns recently brought up Belal’s tweet, and called him to task for UFC 288. Belal tweeted that he would not be able make weight for the UFC 288 event and requested a catchweight match. The two began a Twitter war.
Burns has also called Dustin Poirier to fight. Burns’ next fight has not been confirmed, but UFC President Dana White praised Burns for his desire to fight more.
