Carlos Alcaraz Denies Favorite Tag in Barcelona Even in the Absence of Rafael Nadal

Carlos Alcaraz will face off against the competition in the Barcelona Open. The defending champion was also drawn in a pool that would allow him to play against top seeds only if he advanced into the later stages of the event.

This ATP500 event will have a lower level of competition as both Rafael Nadal and Daniil Medivedev are absent from the draw. Rafael Nadal has been recovering from an injury that cost him the Australian Open. He also missed the Sunshine Doubles. Daniil Medvedev, meanwhile has taken a break due to his constant travel and participation in various tournaments around the world.

Carlos Alcaraz has therefore been elevated as the favorite to win this title. Carlos Alcaraz, in a press interview on the sidelines the Barcelona Open 2023 was asked to comment about his chances, given that the two top seeds will not be playing in the tournament. He refused to call himself the favorite.

“They were contenders, but I do not feel like a favourite because they aren’t there.” “Any player on the board could beat me,” said the World No.2 at the moment.

Rafael Nadal was also wished a quick recovery.

“I want to see only the best players in each tournament. “It’s a pity not to be able appreciate Rafa’s tennis, with all he’s achieved. I wish him a quick recovery,” he added.

This season, the current World No. 1 Novak Djokovic will not be playing at the Barcelona Open.

Can Carlos Alcaraz Win the Barcelona Open Open?

As the current World No.2, the defending champion will be entering this tournament. Novak Djokovic’s absence, along with that of Daniil Medvedev and Holger Rune, will make it easier for him to win the Barcelona Open in 2023. The competition is still full of big names that can cause Carlos Alcaraz problems.

Stefanos Tsitsipas Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas are the top seeds, and they can be a threat to Carlos Alcaraz. The biggest threat to his run is Jannik Sinner. The Italian is causing problems for the Spaniard at the Sunshine Doubles. Carlos Alcaraz managed to defeat Jannik Sinner at the Indian Wells Open semi-finals but lost in the Miami Open semi-finals.

He is also constantly juggling with injuries. Injuries caused him to miss many tournaments during the first part of the season. He missed the chance to play at the Monte-Carlo Masters. He must therefore pay special attention to his health and fitness.
