Fernando Alonso Hurt his Career by Making Enemies in F1, Says Damon Hill

Fernando Alonso has been rated as one of the top drivers in F1. The 41-year old won back-to-back titles in 2005 and 2006 with Renault. The Spanish driver, however, has not won a third championship. Double world champion Alonso has burned many bridges on his journey, whether it was during his disastrous time at McLaren or at Ferrari. Damon Hill insists that Alonso has lost friends due to his behaviour.

The 62 year old recalled a time when Alonso was too harsh with his remarks about his teams. Hill recalled Fernando’s infamous 2015 Japanese GP team radio, when the two time champion referred to the Honda Powerunit as a GP2 motor. Damon said that the Spanish driver had suffered because of this. He told that Alonso (the driver) had lost many friends.

Hill, 41, was well-known for his blunt criticisms of other drivers in the paddock. Hill, however, believes that things are starting to change for the world champion. Fernando will be very different in 2023 than many expected. The Spanish driver is at the forefront in helping Aston Martin, and has helped teammate Lance Stroll set ups.

Damon Hill claims Fernando Alonso has changed.

The former world champion wondered if Fernando was aware of the negative consequences of his past behavior. The 62-year old even suggested that Alonso missed out on more championships as a result. Hill was happy to see the Spaniard mature and grow into a major part of the sport. Damon Hill stated, “He is on his best behaviour, or perhaps he has changed.” I’d like to believe it is the latter .”

The two-time champion had previously formed some bad relations with his former employers. The 41-year old left Ferrari in a bad mood after criticizing them during the 2014 season. Fernando Alonso has recently criticized Alpine’s performance after signing with Aston Martin in 2023.

Damon Hill believes Fernando Alonso is more mature now and doesn’t want to start fights. This season, the Spaniard is a different person as he has settled into his new team. Alonso’s four podium finishes in the first five races this season are a record. It is only a question of time until the 41-year old wins his 33rd F1 race.
