George Russell will join Mercedes in 2022. The 25-year old has defied expectations since then. Russell consistently outperformed Lewis Hamilton in his role as teammate with the Silver Arrows. Since joining the Brackley team, the British driver also has the only victory for the Silver Arrows. George insists that Hamilton being his teammate helped him through the Mercedes troubles.
The 25-year old was happy to share the Silver Arrows car with Lewis Hamilton, particularly at a moment when Mercedes had dropped down the pecking-order and lost their championship-winning streak. George Russell stated, “For myself, being teammates is a great opportunity. It’s especially important now that the car doesn’t perform as we would like. In some ways, having him as my teammate saved me .”
George Russell thought that Hamilton, who was 25 at the time of the incident, would be held responsible for Mercedes’ slowdown if he had left before 2022. He said, “because if Hamilton had retired or quit the sport at the time I joined the Mercedes team. We took a step backwards. They would blame me !”
The 25-year old was confident in his ability to show off on the track, as he raced with Lewis in an equal F1 machine. George Russell no longer has to worry about the pressure. The Briton went on to say , “But now I feel like I’ve proved my worth.” “I’ve shown what I can do, so I don’t feel any pressure.”
George Russell: “Not worried about statistics” in Lewis Hamilton’s case
Hamilton was not able to eclipse Russell when the two were teammates
Russell was happy to be in an ideal position with the Silver Arrows, which allowed him to get the best performance. “I am out there to perform the best I can,” he said. George Russell didn’t care about statistics or his teammate’s pace. He said , “I don’t care about statistics or if I keep up with Lewis’ pace or anything else.”
George Russell, 25, explained that this was due to his consistent performance in the past seven years. He continues to compete with Toto Wolff at Mercedes. He said, “Because, I think I proved that last year. There have been two races so far this year, and I’ve qualified ahead of both of us, and our pace was very similar in the race.” It’s a great honor to compete against one of the greatest .”
George Russell is of the opinion that the 25-year old would have been held responsible for Mercedes’ problems if Lewis Hamilton left the team. The British driver was able to surpass Hamilton’s score over the course 2022. Russell has a good career. The Mercedes driver also wasn’t worried about his future teammates once the seven-time world champion retired.
