KL Rahul’s absence from the World Test Championship Final against Australia is a major blow to Team India. The wicketkeeper will be undergoing thigh surgery. Rahul sustained an injury to his right thigh in an IPL 2023 game against Royal Challengers Bangalore. The Lucknow Super Giants’ (LSG) captain pulled his hamstring when he tried to save a goal.
Rahul left the field but returned to bat. The LSG skipper, however, missed the next match between Chennai Super Kings and is now ruled out of this tournament. The Indian cricket team was hoping that Rahul would recover in time to play the WTC Final.
All these hopes were dashed on Friday, when Rahul confirmed that he would not be attending the mega-match. KL Rahul confirmed on Instagram that he would miss the WTC Final in June and IPL 2023. The wicketkeeper-Batter revealed that he decided to undergo thigh operation to be fully fit.
After careful consideration and consultation, the medical team has decided that I will be having a thigh surgery in the near future. In the weeks to come, I will focus on my recovery and rehabilitation. Rahul posted on Instagram that it was a difficult decision to make but that I knew it was the right choice to ensure a complete recovery ,”.
As the team captain, I am deeply saddened that I will not be present during this critical period. I am confident that my boys will perform at their best as usual. I’ll cheer for them with you all, at every match. @lucknowsupergiants,” Rahul further wrote.
“I’m absolutely gutted I won’t be at Oval next Month with Team India. I will do all I can to help my country and get back into blue. It has always been a priority for me. @indiancricketteam.”
How Rahul’s absence will affect India’s chances
India’s chances of beating a full strength Australian team are affected in many ways by KL Rahul being unavailable for the WTC Final. Rahul had been expected to bat at the middle of the order, but he also was to be the wicketkeeper. The 31-year old has played in England for a while and was expected to be a key player against the Australians.
Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravd will find it difficult to replace him now that he is not available.
