They also used a first-round selection on Iowa linebacker Jake Campbell. Both prospects were expected to be selected on Day 2.
The Lions may have been influenced by Texas running back Bijan robinson being ranked in the Top 10 and deciding to go for the second best running back of the league. The Lions selected great players on day 1, but they were chosen earlier than anyone would have expected.

In the third round of the draft, the Lions chose to select the Tennessee Volunteers Hendon hooker. Hooker completed 69.6% passes in his final year at Tennessee. He had 3135 yards passing, 27 touchdowns and only 2 interceptions. The 25-year old quarterback is a fantastic prospect, but he was unable to compete in the first round due to an ACL injury he suffered during his last season.

Detroit Lions have signed contracts with Jared Goff, and Nate Suffield for the season 2023. Hendon hooker has been added to the QB depth charts.
Jared Goff was the Lions’ starting quarterback for the last two seasons. Goff’s second season with Lions has seen him make significant improvements. In 2022, he had a Pro Bowl year with 4438 yards passing and 27 touchdowns. He also completed 65.1% passes.
Goff is likely to be the Lions’ starting quarterback in 2023 NFL. Goff’s contract is only two years long and if Hendon hooker proves to be the best option, the Lions may decide to move on before the 2024 season. Hooker, if Goff is not injured, will learn the Lions offense from the three-time Pro Bowler.
