Formula 1 has been entertaining fans in the United States since the 1950s. It is now the most popular motorsport competition in the world. F1 is a world of glitz, glamour and excitement. It’s almost every driver’s dream to compete in this competition. Since its beginning, the sport has changed dramatically. Today, many renowned car brands are trying to enter it.
The company decided to quit the sport because of high F1 cost, as well as the purchase of Reutter Factory.
Porsche’s departure was also due to the fact that Porsche’s Volkswagen and German branches were not interested in motor racing at the time, because they considered the racing category too distant from road cars. Porsche’s decision to leave F1 was based on these reasons. If they had stayed, who knows? They might have become an important name in the sport.
Another reason might be that F1 in the 1960s was in its infancy and not yet a global sport. It was only popular in Europe. Porsche could have been influenced by this factor in its decision to leave F1 altogether.
Porsche’s Legacy in Motorsports
Porsche was never able, during its time in F1, to finish higher than third in the Constructors’ Championship. In 1961, the team was able to accomplish this feat with drivers such as Jo Bonnier and Dan Gurney. After the positive result in 1961, the team dropped to 5th in the Championship the following year.
Porsche raced several cars to the pinnacle in motor racing but, after 1961, the company was unable to cope with the demands placed on the sport. The team struggled until 1964, when it decided to give up. The company hierarchy spent many years focusing on the goal of returning to F1 in 2026, but decided to abandon their plans.
There are many hurdles that an F1 team must jump through to be considered for a place. There are no guarantees, even after a complicated procedure. Even if a potential outfit manages to successfully cross all hurdles, they still have to pay an enormous sum to the 10 F1 Teams.
